Louis-Etienne
Watelet, « View of a drapery factory in the City of
Vienne », 1837 (Museum of Fine Arts and Archaeology,
Vienne)
A part of the Vienne collection (ancient sculptures, Latin inscriptions,
mosaic tiling) is housed in the church of Saint-Pierre (Vth-XIIth
centuries). In the former grain hall, place de Miremont, the Museum
of Fine Arts and Archaeology brings together, on the first floor,
the archaeological collections (domestic objects , statuettes in
bronze, Gallic objects
) and the department of Beaux-Arts (earthenware,
paintings
). The collections of graphic arts include engravings,
drawings, early photographs and post cards.
The restoration of the Romanesque cloister of Saint-André-le-Bas
(1938) gave a home to the medieval collections with an exceptional
series of inscriptions and church furniture. The adjacent rooms
have been used, since 1977, to hold temporary exhibitions.
In 1995, the association « Textile Heritage »
created a museum dedicated to the industry of carding wool, the
Museum of Drapery.
The museums of Vienne and the Museum of Archaeology of Saint-Romain-en-Gal/Vienne,
opened in 1996, have undertaken many projects in common : the introduction
of the museums-pass, the exchange of objects and works of art, the
preparation of exhibitions and meetings of the mediation services.
